TEAMM: Who We Are and What We Do!
With the help from a handful of progressive and challenging minds, Teenage Education about Aids in Merida Mexico, a peer-to-peer education program, was constructed by Brazos Abiertos to implement comprehensive sexual health education in Merida, Mexico and surrounding areas of the Yucatan. Focusing primarily on the youth and young adult populations, TEAMM works hard to inform the local communities about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, de-stigmatize the negative attitude towards those infected with HIV, serve as peaceful advocates for safe sex, and facilitate numerous sexual health workshops for local Maya and Mexican youth. TEAMM also distributes condoms, performs anonymous STD and HIV testing with the assistance of trained medical personnel, collaborates with local organizations in Texas and Mexico, and continues to dialogue with adult educators, doctors, STD and HIV specialists, and health organizations and professionals to maintain the community outreach model being utilized by TEAMM and Brazos Abiertos.
TEAMM, also known as TEAMM USA, is comprised of high school and college aged students from the United States who are compelled to empower others with knowledge. TEAMM USA is trained and well-versed in information about sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS, basic male and female reproductive anatomy and physiology, abstinence, contraception, and birth control, and various pertinent topics correlated with relationships, sexual health and prevention.
TEAMM YUCATAN!
Keeping up with the peer-to-peer education program philosophy, another TEAMM was created, TEAMM Yucatan. TEAMM Yucatan is comprised of past participants of TEAMM USA workshops who also wanted to empower their communities with knowledge and power. TEAMM Yucatan has quickly flourished into an ever-growing group of inquisitive individuals and bright, young minds. In the summer of 2008, TEAMM Yucatan was successfully trained by TEAMM USA in order to implement and promote more sexual health workshops and has continued to thrive by participating in community health fairs, safe sex workshops and working with local governmental organizations to gain support for Brazos Abiertos in the Yucatan and surrounding areas.
As a whole...
Joining forces as comrades and friends, TEAMM Yucatan and TEAMM USA will continue to work with each other to understand the extent and impact of the HIV pandemic in the Yucatan, decrease the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in the Yucatan, educate the local communities about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in culturally relevant ways and improve access to healthcare and the overall quality of life for those already living with HIV.
